Cheap website builders: what you really get, and where they stop

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify are the right answer more often than agencies admit. Here is exactly where they win, and the point at which they cost you more than they save.

  • website builders
  • budget

Cheap website builders are not a compromise for a lot of businesses. They are the correct decision. The trick is knowing the exact point where they stop being cheap.

The short answer

If you need a handful of pages, want to edit them yourself, and your site is a shop window rather than the business itself, a builder is the right call. The moment your content behaves like data — hundreds of listings, filters, relationships between records — or the site has to run part of your operation, a builder starts charging you in workarounds.

What you genuinely get

  • A site live in days, not months
  • Editing you can do yourself on a Sunday evening
  • Hosting, security patches and backups handled
  • Payments and a basic shop without a developer
  • A low, predictable monthly cost

What you give up

  • Structure. Builders think in pages. Businesses think in things — properties, speakers, events, products with relationships. Faking that with pages gets unmanageable fast.
  • Speed ceilings. Templates load code you never use. You can get a builder site fast; you cannot get it as fast as a hand-built one.
  • Search depth. Basic metadata is fine. Programmatic landing pages, deep internal linking and full structured data are where builders run out.
  • Ownership. You are renting a shape. Migrating later means rebuilding.

How to buy a builder site well

Even a cheap site is worth doing properly. Pick the template for its structure rather than its photos, write the copy before choosing a layout, compress every image, set titles and descriptions per page, and connect analytics from day one. Most builder sites underperform for those reasons, not the platform.

We build on builders when it is the right answer — see Wix, Squarespace and Shopify builds — and we will tell you when it is not. If your content needs to behave like data, custom-coded WordPress is usually the next step, and if the site is the product, a bespoke build is.
